DESCRIPTION
This vintage engraving depicts Christopher Columbus and the famous tale of the balanced egg. Legend has it that after discovering America, others played down the accomplishment. Columbus challenged some to balance an egg on its end - none could. He then slightly cracked the egg on the table and balanced it. His point - everything looks easy once you see how its done. It is the creation of William Hogarth (1697 - 1764), the brilliant English cartoonist. It was engraved by T. Cook after the painting by Hogarth. Published in an 1810 collection of works by Hogarth, it is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steve Wynn Photography.
