Vintage engraving showing a scene from the Crimean War 1853 to 1856, a conflict in which Russia lost to an alliance of France, Britain, the Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia. Sketch in the interior of the Mamelon Fort. At the Siege of Sevastopol (1854 to 1855) during the Crimea War the French called a strategic hillock the Mamelon. The British adopted the French name for the hill, but also called it Gordon's Hill.
