DESCRIPTION

19th December 1874: A commemorative engraving of two large prize-winning cattle. The animal on the left is the '1st Prize Devon Ox' and on the right the '1st Prize Scotch Highland Ox'. Highland cattle are mainly kept for decorative purposes as they are too slow-growing to provide beef and produce little milk. Farmers often cross the cattle with Shorthorn bulls whose offspring are suitable for beef supply and retain the hardy temperament of the Highland breed. The traditional shaggy animals are still popular at agricultural shows although only 30 pedigree folds remain. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
