DESCRIPTION

James IV (1472 - 1513) King of Scotland, circa 1488, son of James III and Queen Margaret, who was crowned in 1488 after the murder of his father. James, who began his reign aged 15, invested large sums of money in education and research which reflected his personal interests in surgery and dentistry. He founded several colleges including the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (1506) and made it compulsory for wealthy men to educate their sons-in-law and the arts. The printing press was introduced in Scotland during his reign and the first royal residence, Holyrood House, erected. He also expanded the army and built a huge ship (the Michael) to head his fleet but died during a battle against England, while honouring his allegiance to France, despite taking over 20,000 men with him to fight. He was succeeded by his son James V. Original Publication: People Disc - HF0764 (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images) King James IV of Scotland
