circa 1870: John James Peck (1821-1878). American soldier, West Point 1843, in Mexican War 1846-47, in Civil War made brigadier general 1861 commanding a brigade in the Dept. of the Potomac, fought in all Peninsula engagements, held W. Virginia and Virginia south of the James River 1863-64, organized New York State Life Insurance Co. after 1865, served as its president until his death.
