Delcambre's Type-Composing Machine was patented by two Belgian printers Y.H.Young and A.Delcambre of Lille and designed by Henry Bessemer. The design of the keyboard led to the machine being called the 'Pianotype'. The type selected by the operator at right fell down a chute to be collected and set by the operator at left. The Young and Delcambre Composing Machine of 1840 was the first machine known to have actually been made and seen active service. It was used to set the "Family Herald" which was founded in 1842 THE PARIS INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, FRANCE 1867 Original edition from my own archives - Source : "Über Land und Meer" 1881 Working Print 19th Century Style Engraving of Type-Composing Machine
