DESCRIPTION
Men skiing (snow-skating) in Scandinavia (described here as Norway and Lapland). Most of the people appear to be soldiers and all the participants are using just one ski pole instead of two. Woodcut from “Pleasant Hours: A Monthly Journal of Home Reading and Sunday Teaching; Volume III” published by the Church of England’s National Society’s Depository, London, in 1863. To the right of this illustration, one of the soldiers appears to be having a violent encounter with a reindeer!
