Limelight (calcium light) was a type of lighting used in theatres and is made by oxyhydrogen flames acting upon quicklime (calcium oxide), producing an incandescent light. From ‘The Boy’s Own Paper’ 1879-80, a British newspaper for boys which was at that time published by the Religious Tract Society and which featured stories, heroic deeds, facts, educational items and illustrations.
