Utagawa Toyokuni (1769, Edo - February 24, 1825, Edo) was born as the son of a puppet maker. He learned printmaking as a student of Toyoharu. At the beginning of his career he concentrated on bijin-ga - images of beautiful women. Toyokuni's success and fame came when he started making yakusha-e or actor portraits and actor scenes. This image is a  fine Kunisada Genji double half-length portraits series designed circa 1850/51 representing the twelve months of the year. This is the third month March. signature: Toyokuni ga, publisher: Minatoya Kohei and forms part of my own private collection of original woodblock prints.
