circa 1870: American composer, George Frederick Root (1820-1895). Born in Sheffield, Massachusetts, to New York City 1845, organist, Church of the Strangers and taught music at Abbott Institute for Young Ladies. Working with founder of Boston Academy of Music, Lowell Mason, in 1851 he began to compose sentimental ballads and hymns. He is most remembered for his Civil War songs 'The Battle Cry of Freedom' 1862 and 'Tramp, Tramp, Tramp' 1865.
